Autumn, what is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga. It is the science of life. It believes that health & wellbeing is not only a state of freedom from dis-ease but also maintaining a state of balance. We must live according to our own constitution (prakruti) in the time of our cycle, time of year, in the environment (climate) in which we live. When we live disharmoniously for an extended period of time, we become out of balance and this is where we become sick.
Our illnesses are called our Vikruti, a state which is impermanent… whereas we are born with our prakruti.
Dis-ease stems from the mind. Ayurveda’s approach to wellness involves the whole system… the mind, spirit, nutrition, timing of eating, relationships, body, sleep etc... not just in a quantitive sense, but also qualitative.
So this is what we look at addressing in order to bring ourselves back to health.
Ayurveda asks us to look to our greater environment for examples of how best to live. We are the microcosm, in which the universe is the macrocosm.
I use Ayurveda to better understand myself, to better understand others, to better understand our environment and how to live in sync with the flow of life. This means I am better equipped to help those around me.
Knowledge is power, wisdom is healing.
