Dear Everyday athlete

Dear Everyday Athlete,

I get it.

You've got a family to love, chores to attend to, duties to fulfill, friendships to nurture and a job to keep you busy.

When time is precious, energy is emotional and people are priority... Ensuring we treat our bodies as respectfully as possible is actually a non-negotiable.

Who taught you self-sacrifice was conducive to effective… well… anything?

We're taught unconditional love requires sacrifice, yes, but also on the complete flip side total self-sacrifice is irresponsible. You'll allow yourself to be driven into the ground and no help to anyone. In fact, as the Buddhist principle highlights, you'll become more of a burden.

Nobody wants to feel like a burden, we all thrive being in service to one another. If you cannot fulfill your call for service, we often float purposeless. Odds are, if you aren't acting in service, someone is probably doing that for you.

Shade aside (sorry not sorry) this is the beautiful part of my love letter to you.

Everyday Athlete, I think it's time you took your body and exercise seriously. Exercise with planning, support, routine and proper execution is actually training.

And it was a conversation with an inspired colleague about the fact I use the word “training” not exercise, flow, workout etc… that inspired this post. I had simply asked her “how do you like to train?” in hindsight, I think I choose this wording because we all make an active decision in the type of movement practice we invest time and energy into.

(Side note… isn't life just one big training ground?!?!)

So what are you training for?

Why?

So there's your big end-goal… how about breaking it down into monthly goals… and then again into weekly ones. Little bite size achievable chunks.

What does that look like for you?

And how does your body need to be fueled for the performance of this goal?

When you take yourself, your body, your training, your mindset seriously… you have the potential to achieve almost anything. You don't need to be a world-class athlete to approach yourself like this.

If anything, you'll probably inspire and lift those around you at the same time… isn't that incredible?

So my lovely Everyday Athlete, what are you waiting for?

Go design your life.

A 🍁

P.S. also rest, recover and love yourself… this is a huge part of treating yourself like the athlete you are.
